The Al Smith Dinner

Last night was the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner.

The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner is an annual white tie charity fundraiser for Catholic Charities, held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York on the third Thursday of October (Smith died on October 4). It is organized by the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation in honor of former New York Governor Al Smith, the first Catholic presidential candidate. The first dinner was held in 1945.

Since 1960 (when Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy were speakers), it has been a stop for the two main presidential candidates during several U.S. election years.

Candidates have traditionally given humorous speeches poking fun at themselves and their opponents, making the event similar to a roast. It is generally, the last event at which the two candidates share a stage before the election.

Below are Cardinal Dolan's remarks from last night's dinner:

Archbishop Dolan to be named Cardinal

New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan has been named cardinal by the Vatican.
Dolan is one of 22 prelates who will be elevated to cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church in a formal ceremony Feb. 18.
Pope Benedict XVI made the announcement on Friday following an Epiphany Mass that ends the Vatican's top Christmas celebrations.
The Archdiocese of New York said Dolan will speak to the media after celebrating Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan Friday morning.
Cardinals are the pope's key advisers and are members of the group that will eventually elect Benedict's successor.
The pope also named prelates from Hong Kong, Berlin, Prague, Toronto and Florence, Italy, and some Key Vatican offices.
The full list of new Cardinals can be found here: List of new Cardinals

Cardinal-designate Dolan's own words on the news can be read here: Cardinal-designate Dolan's Blog

Christmas vs. Advent

In class this week we started discussing the liturgical calendar and the various Church seasons.  Below is an excerpt and link to an article written by Archbishop Timothy Dolan, about the old-school and new-school views of the Advent and Christmas Seasons.

Here is an excerpt:
"Some form of the Advent Debate usually goes on at every liturgy committee meeting, parish council or family kitchen table, with the "old timers" recalling the days when the celebration of Christmas began the evening of Dec. 24—not the day after Thanksgiving—and lasted until the Epiphany, and the other side telling us to "give-it-up" and admit the reality that Christmas starts at Thanksgiving and ends on Christmas Day."
